What is a RAMDAC?

Last Update: 2009/07/19

RAMDAC stands for Random Access Memory Digital-to-Analog Converter, it is a combination of three fast DAC’s (digital to analog converter) with a small sram used in graphics display adapter to store the color palette, and to generate analog to drive a color monitor. Usually running at 350mhz or 400mhz each ramdac or single ramdac drives a monitor, so in order for a video card to support dual monitors, it must have two RAMDAC’s, which is why integrated video on motherboards usually only support a single output.
